John Raymond Grant Sr., 69, Sandusky, departed this life unexpectedly Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 24, 1938, in De Kalb, Miss., son of the late Andrew and Lizzie (Peden) Grant. He moved to Sandusky in 1951 and worked at Sandusky Dressed Beef for many years until he retired in 1991.

John was blessed in his union to Peggy Hinton Grant, July 26, 1987. The union joined a total of ten children for the couple.

John was a faithful member of New Bethel Bibleway of Sandusky since 1988. He enjoyed fishing, being with family and friends, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He watched every western movie he could, and loved “The Rifleman”, “Big Valley”, “Bonanza” and “Walker: Texas Ranger”.

Those who knew and loved John remember him for his favorite sayings, “Sweetie” for women and “Monkey” for men whose names he had forgotten. As we all know, his most favorite saying was “Uuugh!” John never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone he could.

John leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 20 years, Peggy Hinton Grant; sons, John Grant Jr., Victor Grant and Tim (Shenell) Hinton, all of Sandusky, and Alfred Hinton of Columbus; daughters, Lisa Grant, Stephanie (Elder Sylvester) McSwain, Lynda (Joseph) Easley and Alfreda Culpepper, all of Sandusky, Cassandra Garza of Cleveland and Pamela Hinton of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Carolyn (Welston) Nickelson, Ola Regains and Linda Grant, all of Sandusky; goddaughters, Samantha Lewis and Jamie Lewis; 33 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; special friend, Brian Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Julius Grant; great-granddaughter, Tyonna Nichole Phillips; his loving parents; six sisters, Elsie Taylor, Helen Blakely, Martha Belmar, Maddie Cole, Mable Cromer, and Sadie Grant; and brother, James “Jimmy” Grant Jr.

Friends may call 7–9 p.m. Sunday in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1225 Pierce St., Sandusky; Pastor Eddie D. Hutchins will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
