Alvin Edgar Orwig, 93, of Bellevue, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, in The Bellevue Hospital.
He was born July 5, 1915, in Bellevue, the son of the late David and Florence (Sindla) Orwig.
Alvin graduated from the former York High School in 1934. He was employed at Bellevue Manufacturing Company for 48 years, retiring in 1980. He was a charter member of UAW Local 493 and managed the local union baseball team from 1967-72. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bellevue, where he was an usher for many years, played on the church dartball team and was chairman of the elevator construction committee. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 490, Four County Young At Heart, and United Ostomy Association, Sandusky.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Hazel Clair (Hill) Orwig, whom he married in Bellevue, Oct. 26, 1935; sons, Nelson (Glenna) Orwig of Lawrence, Kan., Roger Orwig of Bellevue and Wesley (Virginia) Orwig of El Paso, Texas; daughter, Carol J. Hoffman of Bellevue; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; four great-great-stepgrandchildren; brother, Robert Orwig of Bellevue; and sister, Winona Hill of Bellevue.
In addition to his parents; his brothers, David Orwig, Denver Orwig and Willard Orwig; and sisters, Irene Orwig and Violet Smith, preceded him in death.
Friends will be received 5-8 p.m. Sunday in Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 209 Southwest St., Bellevue. Burial will follow at York Chapel Cemetery.
