Don A. "Dutch" Welschenbach, 88, of Huron and formerly Sandusky, died Sunday morning, July 6, 2008, in Providence Care Center, Sandusky, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 26, 1920, in Sandusky, and was a 1938 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, serving in the 39th Fighter Squadron. After his duty of service, he attended and graduated from Cleveland College of Mortuary Science. He was employed at the former Frey Funeral Home, Sandusky, for a short time before he became a salesman for the former Chef Pantry/Grill Meats Company, where he was employed for over30 years.
After his retirement, he worked part-time for Pfeil Funeral Homes, Inc.
Dutch was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Sandusky,Science Lodge No. 50, F. & A.M., Singara Grotto, American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529 and Huron Eagles. Dutch and Kate enjoyed attending the 39th Fighter Squadron Association Reunions for many years.
He is survived by his son, Gary (Marilyn) Welschenbach of Fairfax Station, Va.; daughter, Diane (Syd) Sabo of Cincinnati; six grandchildren, Kristy Sabo, Brad (Mindy) Sabo, Todd Sabo, Adam Welschenbach, Kendall Welschenbach and Lauren Welschenbach; sister, Dona Maschari of Sandusky; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen M. "Kate" Welschenbach in 1995; mother, Lydia Cook Welschenbach; father, Nelson C. Welschenbach; and siblings, Leroy Harpst, John Harpst, Edrie Hipp, Marge O'Really, Jean Kajdan, Lois Mae Richards, Nelson W. Welschenbach and Jerry Dienzer.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Friday at Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Ave., where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday; the Rev. Ernest G. Matijasic will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
