Robert Hills Squires Sr., 93, of Amherst, died Friday, June 13, 2008, after a brief illness in Golden Acres Lorain County Nursing Home .
He was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Flint, Mich. His family moved to Oberlin, Ohio, where he was raised and graduated in 1933 from Oberlin High School. He was employed by Jack & Heinz, a defense contractor in Bedford, Ohio. He worked on many nuclear power plants in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. He retired as a steamfitter and welder from Local 42 Plumbers and Pipefitters in Norwalk. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst.
He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, softball and golf.
He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Barry) Becker of Alpharetta, Ga.; a son, Robert H. (Janis) Squires Jr. of Amherst; a sister, Lois Hutchinson of Oberlin; grandchildren, Pam Becker Dean of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Scott Becker of Florence, Ky., RaeDene Norton of Boston, Jenifer Becker of Chicago, Becky Hensley of Sarasoto, Fla., Daniel Squires of Wakeman and Brett Squires of Amherst; four great-grandsons and two stepgreat granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Marie (Franklin); and his sisters, Dorothy McVeigh and Eleanor Kasper.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. The Rev. Lawrence N. Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
