The Rev. William J. Martin, 83, of Sherwood, Ohio, passed away at 7:15 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Ursuline Center in Toledo.

The Rev. Martin was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Sandusky, son of the late William T. and Nell (Bauman) Martin.

He served recently as pastor at St. Stephen's and Marysdale Immaculate Conception Catholic churches now St. Isidore Catholic Church. Following his retirement he assisted at St. Isidore parishes and continued to live at the rectory at St. Isidore, Delaware Bend, Ohio.

He was ordained a priest of the 19 county Catholic Diocese of Toledo May 18, 1950. He served at The Bend, St. Stephen's and Marysdale Immaculate Conception as pastor from 1988 until 2002; at Fostoria, St. Wendelin, as associate pastor from 1986-88; assistant at Toledo, Holy Rosary Cathedral from 1985-86; Diocese of Steubenville from 1980-81; was founding Rector of Seminary of the Holy Spirit from 1964-72; was Assistant Vocational Director for the Diocesan Vocational Office; assistant at Toledo St. Catherine from 1950-64; Toledo Central Catholic High School Vocational Director from 1950-64; assistant at Vermilion St. Mary in 1950; president of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy since 1999; Assistant Commissioner of Children's Mental Health in 1979; chairman of the Vocations Section of the NCEA from 1962-64; Chairman of Junior Clergy Exam Board 1964-72; First International Congress for Priestly Vocation in 1962; and Executive Director of West & Midwest Diocese Vocational Director 1956-61.

He attended Holy Angels, Sts. Peter & Paul, and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1941. He was a graduate of St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana; St. Mary Seminary, Cincinnati; University of Toledo; and The Ohio State University. He obtained his B.A. degree in 1946 from St. Meinrad; a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1960; and his degrees in education from the University of Toledo in 1968 and 1970 and from OSU in 1981.

Surviving is a sister, Catherine Schneider of Fremont; and six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Orchekowski.

Friends are invited to call 4-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday in St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, With Vesper services at 4 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, Ohio 15 North and Glenburg Road, with Bishop Leonard Blair officiating. Interment will be at St. Stephen's Cemetery, Delaware Bend, Ohio.
