James Barton, 81, of Sandusky, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
He was born on Oct. 22, 1926, in Graydon, W.Va. He retired as a self-employed truck driver after 22 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II.
Mr. Barton is survived by his wife, Laura M. (Gill) Barton, whom he married Nov. 16, 1949; four sons, James F. (Mildred) Barton Jr. of Castalia, David G. Barton of Sandusky and William A. (Beth) Barton and Jeffrey B. (Tracy Frantz) Barton, both of Sandusky; nine grandchildren, James, Amy, Dawn, BJ, Michael, Emily, Brianna and Logan Barton and Sandy Shaffer; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amy Willis of Hendersonville, W.Va., and Mary Ann Holliday of Mechanicsville, Va.; three brothers, Walter Barton of Dayton, Ohio, Robert Barton of Green Bay, Wis., and Harry Chapman of West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Barton; his mother and step-father, Elizabeth (Miller) and Raymond Chapman; and brother, Melvin Barton.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. James Gregory of Fellowship Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Memorial contributions may be made to Perkins Fire and Rescue or Stein Hospice.
