Madeline Louise Gwirtz, 77, of Springvillage Drive, Mansfield, Ohio, and formerly of Holtz Road in Shelby, Ohio, died Friday, May 9, 2008, in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after a brief illness.
She was born June 11, 1930, in Syracuse, N.Y., daughter of the late Edward and Madeline J. (Smith) Romell. She was a graduate of Milan High School and was a homemaker. She used her homemaking skills daily as she was an excellent baker and cook. She took pleasure in playing puzzles, bingo and cards and was a voracious reader. She enjoyed the years she and her husband, Richard, spent in Florida and their traditional fall trips to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn.
Madeline is survived by her children, Rick Gwirtz, Randy Gwirtz and Lawrence Gwirtz, all of Columbus, Lou Anne (Kevin) Howell of Shelby and Jodi (Terry) Volz of Ontario, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren; two sisters, Katie Weilnua of Milan and Evelyn (Richard) Beohler of Monroeville; six brothers, Robert (Lou) Romell of Milan, Thomas (Patty) Romell of Monroeville, Richard (Maryann) Romell of Huron, James (Edith) Romell of Sandusky, Harold (Kathy) Romell of Norwalk and Donald Romell of Sandusky; and a sister-in-law, Roberta Romell of South Carolina.
Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Gwirtz in 2003; parents; a brother, John Romell; and a brother-in-law, Howard Weilnua.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. today at Turner Funeral Home, 168 W. Main St., Shelby, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The Rev. Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery.
