Lauretta Barbara Albertina Eichenlaub Walborn 92, Sandusky, passed away early Friday afternoon, May 9, 2008, in Providence Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Sandusky, March 2, 1916, and was a 1934 graduate of Sandusky High School. Orphaned as a teenager, Lauretta was taken in by the Leonard and Colet Shepherd family and cared for as a member of their family. She worked as a bookkeeper for Mr. Shepherd at Erie News until her marriage to Ernest Walborn in June of 1939. She loved to sew and for many years made clothes for herself and her family. She was always willing to do alterations and repairs. In later years she was known as the "Bag Lady", taking remnants of upholstery and making tote bags to sell and give away. The proceeds were donated to Zion Lutheran Church to help fund the elevator and bus.

Lauretta was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was very active in the women's group, quilters, couples club, and taught Sunday school for 30 years. She helped cook many church dinners and was instrumental in starting Cub Scouts at Zion.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Judith) Walborn, Sandusky, Martha (Allan) Timple, Bonita Springs, Fla., and Susan (Earl) VanBarg, Sandusky; grandchildren, Jennifer (Rod) Penwell, Milan, Pamela (Guy) Roth, Castalia, Amy (Kurt) Wray, Sandusky, Dale (Teri) Timple, Bonita Springs, Michael VanBarg, Sandusky, and Holly VanBarg, Sandusky; great-grandchildren, Bethanee Stuckey (Nathan Sanger), Milan, Jessica Stuckey, Huron, Nicholas Stuckey, Castalia, Brian (Megan) Popke, Kristen Popke, Sandusky, and Dezarae Timple (Phillip Schramm), Lakeview, N.Y., Hunter Penwell, Milan; great-great-grandsons, twins, Alexander Sanger and Anthony Sanger, Milan, and Phillip Schramm, Lakeview, who was born just hours before Lauretta's death; special niece, Sally McCann; several other nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Monabelle Johnson, Spring Hill, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Donald Walborn, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. Surviving siblings in the Shepherd family are, Colet (Robert) Foley, Joe (Nancy) Shepherd, and John (Annette) Shepherd.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Walborn, Jan. 10, 1989; grandsons, Brian Timple, Bruce Timple, and Christopher Timple, all in infancy; parents, Valentine and Alvina (Sehlmeyer) Eichenlaub; and sister, Eda Eichenlaub (William) McClure.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Church Gathering Room, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church; the Rev. John Mawhirter officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky. Arrangements entrusted to David F. Koch Funeral Home, Sandusky.
