Mary Helen Guendelsberger, 88, Sandusky, died early Saturday morning, May 10, 2008, surrounded by her family in Stein Hospice Care Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Sandusky, May 3, 1920. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Mary's High School and 1941 graduate of Mercy School of Nursing, Toledo, Ohio.
She was a veteran of the Army Nurse Corp. She served in World War II from 1942-1946, with tours of duty in England and France.
She was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was on the Church Bereavement Committee. Mary loved gardening, playing bridge and was devoted to her family.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Guendelsberger, whom she married July 27, 1946; daughter, Mary Jo Martin, Sandusky; three sons, Thomas (Christine), Oakton, Va., Gary (Judy), Sandusky, and Richard, Charlottesville, Va.; five grandchildren, Matt (Julie) Martin, Chad (Danielle), Bryan, Emily, and Caitlin Guendelsberger; great-granddaughter, Abbie Marie Guendelsberger; brother, William (Jane Ann) Weigel; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Cletus James and Felicitas (Phipps) Weigel; and brother, James Weigel.
Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Wednesday in the Commons at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, with A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the church; the Rev. Doug Garand will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Groff Funeral Home, Sandusky, is in charge of arrangements.
