Dorothy Louise Jackson, 81, formerly of Sandusky and Augusta, Ga., passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, at the home of her son William Jackson after a year-long battle with lung cancer.
She was born May 16, 1926, in Washington County, Ga., to Cherry and Moses Jackson. She had graduated T. J. Ellis High School in Washington County. She later moved to Augusta where she married Thomas Jackson, also known as Tommie Jackson Jr., her husband of 26 years.
She and Tommie moved to Sandusky where they raised their children. After Tommie passed, she relocated back to Augusta to take care of her ailing father. She finally moved to Columbus to her recent home.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and Swint Springs Baptist Church. She served for many years as a sympathetic caregiver at various medical facilities and hospitals in the Sandusky area. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She was devoted to assisting in the care of people with needs. She instilled in her children the desire for knowledge that formed the basis of their educational achievements.
She is survived by her sons, Daniel (Fabienne) Jackson of West Hartford, Conn., and William (Melissa) Jackson of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; five grandchildren, Aislynn, Nicole, Brandon, Thomas and Gabrielle; several nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Mary Susan; her parents; her brothers, Bean Swint, William "Sonny Boy" Jackson and Johnnie Jackson; and her sisters, Willie Ferguson and Eloise Perry.
There will be no visitation. The family will gather privately. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements. The family wishes to acknowledge Robin Steward, her caregiver, and the VistaCare staff, especially Caroline Newman, her nurse, for their support during Dorothy's last few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Thomas and Dorothy Jackson Dare to Dream Memorial Scholarship in care of The Sandusky/Erie County Community Foundation, 135 E. Washington Row, Sandusky, OH 44870; or to VistaCare Hospice Foundation, 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 3500, Scottsdale, AZ 85251.
