Donald L. Schweinfurth, 79, Sandusky, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, in Ohio Veterans Home.
He was born in Sandusky, Dec. 12, 1928, and was a 1946 graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Korean War from 1948-52. He was employed by Brown Industries, Hinde & Dauch, and retired from Chesapeake in 1996.
He was a lifetime member of Amvets Post 17, Sandusky, and American Legion Post 83, Sandusky, where he was a member of the color guard, 40 & 8 and served one term as Chef-de-gare. Don was also an avid bowler.
He is survived by his wife, Willa "Billie" (Strouse) Schweinfurth, to whom he was married 54 years; daughters, Shelley (Gary) Laws, Milan, Fran Valek, Lakewood, Ohio, and Krista (Andy) Plowman, Sheffield Lake, Ohio; sons, Ron (Caroline) Schweinfurth, Sandusky, Jeff (Kathy) Schweinfurth, Huber Heights, Ohio, Toby (Angie) Schweinfurth, Cleveland, and Carey "CJ" (Sara) Schweinfurth, Sandusky; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, John "Jay" and daughter, Heidi; parents, Lester and Dorthea (Thiede) Schweinfurth; and son-in-law, Tom Valek.
There will be no visitation. A military service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Ohio Veterans Home, Giffin Chapel, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Paul Birmingham will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio Veterans Home volunteers of C Unit, or to Humane Society of Erie County, 1911 Superior St., Sandusky, OH 44870.
