Harvey B. Kishman, 82, of Castalia, was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, April 3, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born in Lorain, Ohio, Dec. 1, 1925, to Carl L. and Doris (Palmer) Kishman. He quit high school after his junior year, during World War II, but received his diploma while overseas in service to his country. He served in the 1st Marine Division as a Rifle Company radio operator in the battle campaigns for Peleliu and Okinawa.

At war's end, he served duty in China. He finally headed for home on the USS Roi, an auxiliary aircraft carrier, in January, 1946.

His fondest memory was sitting on the flight deck in the evening, music playing, viewing the vast ocean and watching schools of porpoises swimming by in its wake.

He knew that after three years, he would soon be home in the loving arms of his mother.

Harvey graduated in 1949 from the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland. He retired from General Motors Army Tank Plant, Cleveland, where he was a technical writer and graphic artist during development of the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. He retired from Ridge Tool Company, Elyria.

Harvey married his best friend, Rachel E. Tressler, in Port Clinton, Jan. 13, 1989. He was a lifetime VFW member with Post 1079 in Elyria, and later with Post 2529 in Sandusky. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Fremont.

He is survived by his loving spouse, Rachel E. Kishman; four sons, Marc P., Gregg T. and Kurt B. Kishman, all of Elyria, and Davey W. Kishman, Castalia; one daughter, Kendra M., Castalia; two stepdaughters, Sheryl L. (Matt) Simko, Painesville, and Tami Gee, Hillsboro, Ohio; parents-in-law, the Rev. J. Ward and Agnes Tressler, Fremont; sisters-in-law, Deborah (Les) Cancel, Sacramento, Calif., and Lois (Dave) Harmon, Jerseyville, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Doris (Palmer) Kishman; son, Karl R. in 1991; and brothers, Carl Kishman and Charles Kishman.

Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Grace Community Church in Fremont; Pastor Kevin Pinkerton, Pastor J. Ward Tressler and Pastor Forrest Kirchenbauer will officiate.

A luncheon at the church will immediately follow.
