Leland Peter Spore, 79, of Sandusky, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Columbus. He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1946 and from Heidelberg College in 1951. In 2007 he was inducted in the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region Hall of Fame Inaugural Class, having donated more than 32 gallons of whole blood.

He served in the Army in Korea and Japan during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Campaign Star, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). He was employed by American Crayon/Dixon Ticonderoga as an accountant, for 42 years. He served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army for many years, was a charter member and served on the Board of Trustees of the Old House Guild from its inception until the present. As a Gideon, he carried the message to many churches in Erie County and the state, and held many offices in the local camp over the years.

As a member of Grace Episcopal Church, he served several terms on the Vestry, taught Sunday school, served as a Lay Reader and sang in the choir over a period of 70 years. During his retirement, he was a familiar figure picking up litter in the downtown area.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet; sons, Peter L. (Marilee) Spore of Castalia, Jan W. (Ann) Spore of Wyoming, Ohio, and Richard R. (Tracy) Spore of Sandusky; sister, Gloria Helfrich of Champaign, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie S. Whisman; parents, Leland P. and Dorothy B. Spore; brother, David in infancy; sister, Nancy McCann; and a niece, Kathleen N. McCann.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky. The Rev. Ernest Matijasic will officiate.
