Joseph A. Whelan, 79, of Huron, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his residence.
Born Oct. 3, 1928, in East Cleveland, Ohio, he lived in Lake County, Ohio, for most of his life, living in Willowick and Painesville prior to moving to Huron a short time ago.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving with the 101st Airborne, and was a member of Willoughby VFW Post 1500 and American Legion Post 678 in Willowick.
Mr. Whelan loved sports and was an avid golfer. He became a teaching golf professional after retiring from the Cleveland Plain Dealer where he was a district manager. He gave golf lessons at Lost Nation Golf Course and Bobick's Pro Shop, both in Willoughby, Ohio. He also worked at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, where he helped out at the equestrian center, taking students back and forth from the school to the center. "He was a kind, gentle and patient man."
He was the loving husband of Jane E. Whelan (Taylor-Molder), and the late Jean Whelan (McAuliffe); loving father of Joseph (Janet) Whelan and Jack Whelan, both of Perrysburg, Ohio, Mary Kay (Vic) Matteucci of Mentor, Ohio, Kelly Whelan of Wickliffe, Ohio, Brock (Cindy) Rimmelin of Perrysburg, and the late James Whelan; grandfather of 11; brother of Mary (John) Vidmar of Highland Heights, Ohio, Geraldine Kanter of Beachwood, Ohio, and the late Jacqueline Whelan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was fondly thought of, and highly respected, by his wife, Jane's, entire family.
His parents, John and Marie Whelan (Griffiths); and brother-in-law, Marv Kanter, preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday in McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Avenue, Willoughby. A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Magdalene Church, 460 E. 321 St., Willowick.
