Gloria E. Mahler, 74, of Port Clinton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.
She was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Wyandotte, Mich., the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Ramsdell) Mackey. She graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1952. On August 27, 1955, she married Jack J. Mahler in Gypsum, Ohio; he preceded her in death, April 25, 2006. Gloria served as a U.S. Army nurse in Japan. She worked in the cafeteria for the Port Clinton City Schools for over 20 years and was known as the “Cafeteria Lady.” Gloria also worked as a nurse at Standard Products, “before the kids.” She was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Marblehead. Gloria was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood, and VFW Homer D. Gardner Post 2480. She loved crocheting sweaters for all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gloria enjoyed gardening and especially loved growing her violet plants. She will be greatly missed by her loving family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Joseph (Amy) Mahler of Wooster, Ohio, and Douglas (Roberta) Mahler of Port Clinton; daughter, Sidney Smith of Port Clinton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronald (Janice) Mackey of San Diego, and Howard (Paula) Mackey of Oak Harbor; and sister, LuAnne (John) Forbes of Perrysburg, Ohio.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brother, Vern Mackey.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, in the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Chris Young. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton; the VFW will perform a military graveside service.
