Joseph John Riedy, 88, a lifelong resident of Sandusky, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky after a brief illness.

Joe was born Oct. 1, 1919, to Louise (Kelley) and Raymond S. Riedy. He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1938 where he was a track star, winning numerous state awards. He spent four years in the U.S. Army, three of them in the South Pacific and the Philippines during World War II, and was awarded a Purple Heart.

While preparing for overseas combat, Joe was stationed in Reading, Pa., where he met his future wife, Eleanor (Dych) at a USO dance. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary Feb. 16, 2008.

Along with his brothers, Joe was an owner of R.S. Riedy and Sons Roofing and Siding Co., started by his father. He served as president until his retirement in 1985. He was a lifelong communicant at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree. He was a member of the Sandusky Yacht Club for more than 40 years and was a life-member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Joe was also a lifetime sports enthusiast. He was an avid golfer and bridge player and enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling, politics, history and watching sporting events on TV.

In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his children, Allen of Honolulu, Marilyn Claise and her husband, Ron, of Lexington, Mass., John of Sandusky and Nancy Funk of Marietta, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond and Ned, and a sister, Helen Wagner, all of Sandusky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Marian Weber.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Monday at David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where a liturgical service will be at 6:30 p.m. Prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev.Marty Nassr will officiate.Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Sandusky.
