Fenton David McGookey, 83, of Sandusky, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.
He was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Castalia and was a lifelong resident of the Sandusky area. After being in the Air Force, from 1942-1946, during World War II and flying over the Pacific, he worked at Medusa Cement Co. for two years. He then took a job with the Lower Lakes Dock Co. and worked for 41 years, retiring in 1989. During that time he also worked part-time for Cloverleaf Dairy. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky, the Senior Men's Group of the Sandusky Area YMCA, the American Legion and the VFW, of Sandusky. He enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, card playing and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Rita (Meyer), married for 62 years; two daughters, Susan (Leonard) Klohn and Martha (Fred) Thompson, both of Sandusky; and three grandsons, Lucas and Kevin Thompson and Daniel Klohn, all of Sandusky.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fenton B. and Marjorie (Krueger) McGookey; two sisters, Mariem Wood and Patricia McGookey; and an infant brother, Robert McGookey.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Pfeil Funeral Home Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., Monday, in Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. John Mawhirter will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
