Jay Franklin Foss, 74, of Huron, passed away Feb. 7, 2008, in Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a sudden illness.

He was born Aug. 23, 1933, in Fremont, the son of Harold Foss Sr. and Henrietta (Fick) Foss. Jay grew up in Fremont and was a 1951 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. Following graduation, he was employed by Sorings Controls, where he met his wife, Dorothy (VanNess) of Gibsonburg, Ohio. They were married April 11, 1953, in Zion Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg.

In 1956, Jay joined Ford Motor Co. in Sandusky as an industrial engineer. In his 35 years with Ford, Jay was one of the plant's most prolific and successful cost-saving contributors, rewarded numerous times for his cost-saving suggestions. In 1975, Jay finished second in the National Association of Suggestion Systems' worldwide competition. While living in Fremont, he was a member of Fremont Jaycees and the Fremont Yacht Club. Most recently, he was involved with the Eagles Club of Huron and American Legion in Sandusky. Jay was an avid Michigan sports fan, following the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and the Michigan Wolverines. He also enjoyed traveling, golfing and fishing with his grandkids and refinishing furniture.

Jay is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; their four children, Connie Connors of Shoreham, Vt., and her partner, Larry Provost, Teresa Robles of Stratham, N.H., and her fianc, Tom Hemenway, Jeff Foss of Boise, Idaho, and his wife, Carol, and Joel Foss of Sandusky, and his wife, Karen; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Foss Jr. of Royal Oak, Mich.; and two half-brothers, John Foss of Hale, Mich., and Jim Foss of Garden City, Mich.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Walter Foss.

There will be a memorial service celebrating Jay's life at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 930 Main St. in Huron. A reception will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church. A private interment service for family members at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont will be later.
