Marjorie H. Rakes, 84, of Port Clinton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at her son's residence.
She was born in Port Clinton, March 1, 1923, the daughter of Hans and Goldie (Felder) Christiansen. Her first husband, William L. Matthews Sr., preceded her in death. In 1969 she married Virgil "Torch" Rakes, who also preceded her in death, Jan. 31, 1987.
Marjorie worked as a secretary for the Ottawa County Auditor's office, retiring in 1987. Prior to that, she worked at U. S. Gypsum and Erie Army Depot. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor. Marjorie was a member of the Grandmothers Club, David W. Leonard Aerie 2295 Auxiliary, VFW Homer D. Gardner Post 2480 Auxiliary, Women of the Moose Lodge 1610, American Legion Post 113 Auxiliary, Bay Township Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Sarah Circle, all of Port Clinton. She was an avid card player. Marjorie loved to travel and go to shows. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Gary (Georgiann) Matthews of Port Clinton, and Randy (Lynnette) Matthews of Rocky Ridge, Ohio; four stepchildren; grandsons, Brent Matthews and Tony Matthews; stepgrandson, Cory Rowe; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Foreman of Catawba Island.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her son, William L. Matthews Jr.; first husband, William L. Matthews Sr.; parents; and stepmother, Dorothy Christiansen.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, in Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, Port Clinton, where a combined Eagles Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary service will be at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, conducted by Pastor Cheryl Wessel. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton.
