Albert R. Showalter, 85, of Norwalk, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born April 10, 1927, in Clarksfield, Ohio, to the late Fay D. and Elsie V. (Stegman) Showalter, and was a lifelong area resident. Al was a 1945 graduate of Bellevue High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
He was a member of the Norwalk First United Methodist Church. Al retired from Maple City Rubber Company of Norwalk, in 1989 and was a former Realtor for A & F Realty of Milan, and Vermilion River Realty. He was also a former sidewalk inspector for the City of Norwalk. Al was a member of American Legion Post 83 of Sandusky, and the Berlin Township Farmers and Hunters Conservation Club. He was the co-founder of the Lefty Grove Youth Baseball League of Norwalk, a volunteer for the Huron County Juvenile Court, past president of the Norwalk Jaycees, and served on the board of directors of the Hunters Glen Condominium Association. Al enjoyed gardening and being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Claudia Simons of Norwalk; grandchildren, Alison Simons, Kevin Williams, and Kelsey and Jack Beckett; brother and sister-in-law, Gus and Joann Showalter of Monroeville; and sister, Doris Palko of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Ellis) Showalter in 1997; brothers, George, Jack, Rennie, and Robert; and sisters, Jane Kromer, KayAnn Kromer and Geraldine Andy.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, Rev. Charlie Jarvis will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
