Mary A. Opfer, 91, of Elyria, died Friday, in Lifecare Center of Elyria, following a brief illness.
She was born March 24, 1916, in Berlin Heights, and was an Elyria-area resident for most of her life. She was a teacher with the Elyria City School system for many years, retiring in 1974. During her teaching career, she taught for one year in Great Britain, and also taught with the Armed Forces in Japan and Germany. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Elyria, the National, Ohio, and Elyria Education Associations, the Jolly 60's, and the Elyria YWCA. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, and traveling.
Survivors include her sisters, Elsie DeLamatre of Vermilion, Kate Doust of Fremont, and Pauline Ward of Berlin Heights; brother, Philip Opfer of Sandusky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Elsie Opfer; sister, Helen Schroeder; and brother, Fred Opfer.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. Monday, until services at 1 p.m. in Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home, Chestnut Ridge Road at Ohio 57, Elyria. The Rev. Christina Kukuk, pastor of First Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Berlin Heights.
