Maria (Calabrese) Barone - June 17, 1923-January 13, 2008

Sep 3, 2015

Maria (Calabrese) Barone, 84, of Sandusky, loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, was welcomed home by God late in the afternoon Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Providence Care Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 17, 1923, in Modica, Sicily, to Ignazio and Sarafina (DiGiacomo) Calabrese. She married George Barone and moved from Sicily to Sandusky in January 1950.

Maria and her husband, who died in 1988, had a long and respected history in the restaurant business, beginning with George and Maria's, followed by Cedar Villa Italian Restaurant and finally, Barone's Roman Villa. They were partners in life and in business but Maria "owned" the kitchen at home. She enjoyed creating new recipes, sewing and exercising her green thumb. Maria loved welcoming others to her table and could feed 50 almost as easily as 10.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish.

Surviving are her children, Sister Ann Carmen Barone, a Sylvania Franciscan nun, Joseph (Lynne) of Westerville and Donald (Carol) of Huron; grandchildren, G. Ryan (Stephanie), John David (Beth), Aaron, and Maria, all of the Columbus area; great-grandchildren, Abby, Zach and Owen Joseph; sisters, Concetta Spadaro and Sarafina Giannone; sisters-in-law, Ann Barone and Elvira Calabrese; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brothers, Giuseppe, Michele and Rosario.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, with a prayer service led by the family at 6:30 p.m. Prayers will begin at 9:40 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, with the Rev. Marty Nassr officiating. Burial will be at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

The Barone family wishes to thank all those at Stein Hospice and Providence Care Center who gave their mother such professional and loving care as her Alzheimer's progressed and she became more frail.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870; Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870; or Providence Care Center, 2023 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870.
