Miss Juanita E. Mathews, 89, of Avon, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at Avon Oaks Nursing Home following a long illness.
She was born in Huron, Aug. 1, 1918. She was a graduate of Huron High School, class of 1935, and of the Frances Payne School of Nursing. She began her career in practical nursing, serving the county health districts of Erie, Lorain and Knox; she retired in 1978. A recognized expert in the field of elementary school health education, she was published in several professional journals. Following retirement, she enjoyed her Winter Park, Fla., residence for 29 years before returning home to be near her family.
She is survived by her caregivers: nephews Doug Mathews of Lorain, and Chase Heyman of Norwalk; and niece Dawn Moreno of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, DeLacy and Jennie M. (Thomson) Mathews; and brothers William and Calvin Mathews.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Scott Cemetery, Huron-Avery Road, Huron. Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals is handling arrangements.
