Robert J. Gilbert, 83, of Clyde died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, in Bellevue Hospital.
Mr. Gilbert was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Clyde to LeRoy and Crystal Dawn (Gilbert) Gilbert, now deceased. He graduated from Clyde High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army and later the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was a baker, having started with the New System Bakery in Fremont and finally owning and operating the Danish Pastry in Fremont for 17 years, prior to his retirement in June of 1981. In 1961-62, he owned and operated the former Lighthouse in Clyde.
Mr. Gilbert was formerly a member of the Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, Chapter S, and enjoyed working with wood and camping.
His survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Duecker) Gilbert whom he married Sept. 20, 1945; two daughters, Beverly (Donald) Burroughs and Nancy (Louie) Snyder, both of Clyde; five grandchildren, Rhonda (Brad) Mitchell, Susan Wilson, Dawn (Chris) Gibson, Leroy (Kim) Snyder and Timothy (Alicia) Snyder; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Hirt of Clyde.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde., where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Linda Nanninga will officiate. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery, Clyde.
