M.W. "Moe" Richardson, 83, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, after a yearlong battle with cancer in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born in Amsterdam, N.Y., where he attended public schools. He served in the highly decorated 412th Thunderbolt Fighter Squadron and the 363rd P-51 Mustang Fighter Group of the 9th Army Air Force in Europe during W.W.II. He was a charter member of the 9th Air Force Association, a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 83, Sandusky, and Sandusky Elks Club.
Mr. Richardson studied mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received a degree in textile engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He was employed as a product engineer by B.F. Goodrich Aerospace, as a field sales engineer by Farrel Birmingham Co. and was Vice-president of Stewart Bolling Co. in Cleveland. Mr. Richardson was well recognized in his field and did contract engineering and consulting in the rubber, plastics and Web process industries. He was formerly a member of the Akron Rubber Group division of the American Chemical Society, The American Society for Testing Materials and the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Moe was a lifelong racing and cruising sailor, having built, restored, and repaired many boats. He was owner of Richardson Marine and V & M Associates Inc. of Wilmington, Del. He was a former member of Sandy Bay Yacht Club, Rockport, Mass., Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club in Eastlake, life member of Sandusky Sailing Club and a recipient of the Lyman Memorial Award. He belonged to the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club and the Great Lakes Cruising Club. Moe was formerly city agent for the Sadler Sailing Basin where he engineered and supervised its reconstruction and modernization. Mr. Richardson was also a member of the John Howland Pilgrim Society of Plymouth, Massachusetts and was quite proud of his patriotic ancestry.
He is survived by his wife, Vera (Sawosik); son, Michael Tyler Richardson; granddaughter, Holly Richardson of Huron; a sister, Jane (Eugene) Wright of Schenectady, N.Y.; and a brother, Ralph (Sue) Richardson of Framingham, Mass.; along with nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, "PJ" Paula Jean (Richardson) Rose formerly of Jacksonville, Fla.; and parents, Maurice W. and Cecil (Flewelling) Richardson.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007, at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Ohio St., Huron. The Rev. Wanda Ray will officiate.
