Elizabeth A. (Rader) Stookey , 84, of Sandusky, ended her journey through life Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Sandusky, and was a graduate of St. Mary High School and St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Toledo. As a registered nurse, she worked 40 years at Providence Hospital, a career of dedication and love to her profession. Patients and co-workers were considered family. She was among the first nurses to be trained for the dialysis unit in Providence Hospital.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, loved boating, fishing, gardening, sewing and traveling. The last ten years of her life she was dedicated to Stookey's Winter Wonderland, which brought joy to the children of the surrounding areas, and benefited the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Her role as Mrs. Claus was the highlight of each year. She was instrumental in organizing and gaining sponsorship for the event.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Susan E. Stookey of Sandusky; sons, Timothy W. (Marra) Stookey and Gregory S. (Karen) Stookey, both of Sandusky; grandchildren, Michelle Nolan, Kristina Moffit, Justin Stookey, Amber Stookey and Chad Stookey; great-grandchildren, Sydney Nolan, Nelia Nolan, Jaylin Moffit and Kendal Moffit; and her faithful protector, her dog Country.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne R. Stookey, whom she married Oct. 21, 1945; parents, Fred and Elsie Rader; and a sister, Geraldine Melville.
A memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Philip Feltman will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
