Francis James "Lance" Amburn, 62, of 411 Center St., Sandusky, passed away in his sleep Friday, Nov. 9, 2007. Francis fought a long and courageous battle against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Francis was a 1964 graduate of Sandusky St. Mary High School and attended Bowling Green State University for four years where he was on the Dean's List majoring in both social science and education. He is a distinguished Vietnam combat veteran and was nominated for the Purple Heart after being blown off the roof of his AVP upon impact of a powerful landmine.
Francis was an outstanding all around athlete, excelling in football, basketball and baseball. He was an outstanding all star team shortstop on the 1960 Sandusky City and Erie County league championship baseball team and was scouted by the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers.
In basketball, he was truly gifted and capable of accurately shooting jump shots and hook shots with either hand.
In his sophomore year, Francis set the school intramural basketball record of 55 points against an all-senior team.
As a junior, Francis was nominated All-Sandusky Bay Conference defensive halfback.
He was a supervisor of security for Providence Hospital for 25 years before retiring in 2000. His greatest assets were his strong religious convictions, work ethic, unique personality, his ability to articulate and express himself and his universal affection for people in general.
He is survived by his loving 99 year old mother, Monica; brothers and sisters-in-law, O. Ren Amburn M.D., Sandusky, Pirre and Nancy Amburn of Cleveland and Walter and Connie Amburn of Sandusky; cousins, Dr. Herschel Amburn of Virginia and Peggy Kirby of Zanesville, Ohio; niece, Rene Michelle Amburn; friend, Larry Kaye of Maryland; nephew, Brent Amburn of Ococee, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Shane, Connor, Falyn and Willow; and many loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville; paternal grandparents, Walter "Walt" and Amelia (Wagner) Amburn; maternal grandparents, Ren and Monica Fivet; great-aunt, Yvonne M. Fivet; cousins, Lillian and Yvonne M. Fivet; and his uncles and aunts, Herschel and Donna Amburn and Emerson and Cleona (Amburn) Merriam.
Friend may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where prayer services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
