John Gerald Ginty, 85, of Sandusky, passed away Feb. 17, 2012, at St. Anne's Hospital in Westerville, Ohio, after a brief illness.
He was born to Josephine and John Ginty on June 2, 1926, in Lorain, where he graduated from St. Mary's High School. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he attended John Carroll University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Relations.
He moved his family from Cleveland to the Sandusky area to take a position at the Ford Motor Co., where he held a variety of management positions, with the majority of his time as a safety engineer. He retired in 1986 after 30 years of employment.
John is survived by his nine children, Mary Jo (Costello) of Long Beach, Calif., John (Jodi) of Bellevue, Carol (Dan) Geist of Boxborough, Mass., Patti (Mike) Bunt of Eminence, Ky., Richard of Clyde, Bill of Farum, Denmark, Donald of Sandusky, Joe (Norah) of Lancaster, and Mark (Bronwyn), Gahanna, Ohio; 18 grandchildren, Tony (Scotia) Delpercio, Jessica, Laurel, Ariel, David, Jasmine, Alex, Christina, Amber, Colin, Rosie, Jonathan, Victoria, Spencer, Savannah, Anna, Aedan and Maeve; three great-grandchildren, Abigayle, Kamron and Willow; and sister, Patricia Siddall of Ashland, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Shirley, who passed away in June 2010; sister, Sister Mary Ellen IMH; and brothers, James (Bob) and Richard.
His involvement in the community was a legacy he left his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was an active member of St. Mary's Parish, including St. Vincent DePaul and Holy Name Society; a former Sandusky city commissioner; and a member of the Sandusky Safety Council for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Senior Men's Group, Men's Cancer Support Group, the local chapter of the National Alliance of Mentally Ill, OSHIP, Erie Shores Network, ADA Advisory Board for the city of Sandusky, Serving Our Seniors and Ford Retirees group.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. David Nuss will officiate, and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 83 Honor Guard.
It was John's request that any memorials be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bellevue Assembly of God or your charity of choice.
