John R. Zitter, 85, Helena, Ohio, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at home.
He was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Buffalo, N.Y., to John Francis and Mary Margaret (Brennan) Zitter. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and was part of the Air Offensive in Japan. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.
He married Ruth Marie Gilkerson Dec. 24, 1948, in Buffalo. She died July 31, 1987.
John was employed in production repair with Ford Motor Company, Sandusky, for 32 years retiring in 1988. He was a member St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of UAW Local 1216. He loved reading and taking walks and enjoyed trains, wrestling, fishing and being with his family.
John is survived by his daughters, Valerie Zerman, Regina (Bill) Rohrbough, Rikki (Tim) Kotch and Rebecca (Charlie) Carrothers, all of Fremont, Ruth (John) Hensley of Sandusky, Mary (Alex) Agueda of Buffalo and Jodi (Jeff) Stephens of Gibsonburg, Ohio; sons, Carl (Mel) Zitter of Helena and John Zitter of Sandusky; sister, Eileen LaPlante, N.Y.; and 29 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Castalia Cemetery, Castalia.
