William B. Houle, 86, of Gardner Road, Bellevue, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, in The Bellevue Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on July 7, 1921, son of the now deceased Albert Clare and Atho M. (Boyd) Houle. He retired in 1980 as the supervisor of cost accounting at Ford Motor Company, Sandusky.
Bill was a 1939 graduate of Bellevue Senior High School. After graduation he attended the University of Michigan where he played freshman and varsity basketball. He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed at Nichols General Hospital in Louisville, Ky., and served in the 580th battalion in England, France, Germany and Belgium. Bill attended the Nuremberg Trials after World War II in Germany and attended Oxford University while stationed in England. Bill enjoyed participating in local basketball and volleyball teams, as well as coaching church league teams at the YMCA. He was also a referee for softball and basketball. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was an avid Michigan fan. He was a member of the Seybert United Methodist Church, Bellevue, life member of Eagles Aerie 490, VFW Post 1036, American Legion Liberty Post 46, and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity; and was inducted into the Bellevue Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth L. "Bettie" (Thomas) Houle whom he married Aug. 7, 1943, in Louisville, Ky. His son, William C. (Debbie) Houle of Clyde; daughter, Pamela "Pam" (Bruce) Wagner of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; grandchildren, Jacquie (Chris) Wells, Wendy (Len) Eisenloeffel, Erick (Jen) Wagner, Amy (Todd) DeWitt and Heather Wagner; great-grandchildren, Brody, Erin, Morgan, Dylan, Mitchell, Madison, Brandon, Max and Mikaela; nephews, Dr. Larry Zechman and Lynn Zechman.
In addition to his parents, his sister, Margaret Jane Zechman preceded him in death.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Thursday in Foos and Son Funeral Home, 311 W. Main St., Bellevue. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Seybert United Methodist Church, 442 W. Main St., Bellevue. Burial will follow in Bellevue Catholic Cemetery.
