Lawson Wood, 82, of Sandusky, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, in Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born April 14, 1925, in Sandusky, to Ed and Ella (Vance) Wood, and was a lifelong resident. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran having served in the South Pacific. He was employed by Aluminum Magnesium for 34 years, and retired from New Departure Hyatt in 1988.

Lawson was a lifetime member and past commander of American Legion Post 83, past Chef de Gare of 40+8, member of Past Commanders Club, lifetime member of Sandusky VFW Post 2529, and Sandusky AMVETS Post 17. He was very active as a Mason and served in many positions within the organization. He was past Master of Progress Lodge 85 F&AM; past worthy patron of Lakeview 65 Eastern Stars; past high priest of Gordon Clemens Chapter Royal Arch Masons 54; an inspector general of the 33rd Degree, Bezaleel Consistory 15, Valley of Cleveland; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, P.H.; a noble in Al Lalim Temple 223, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Elyria; and past worthy Joshua, Floyd C. Churchwell Ct. 8, Heroines of Jericho. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and recently attended Faith Memorial Church. He loved to hunt and fish.

Lawson is survived by his devoted wife, Christine (Peale) Wood, whom he married Sept. 26, 1970; daughters, Carole Ann Butler, Betty Ellen Mason, Angela L. Miller, Karen L. (Kevin) Jones, and Kimberly J. (Clarence, Jr.) Brown; son, Robert G. Ellis; grandchildren, Heath Mason, Jabar Butler, Tiffani Butler, N. Kristen Jones, Chales Jones, Sierra Jones, Shawn Ellis and Alaysia Brown; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Rice; brother-in-law, Vester DuPree; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Minnie; and brother, Walter.

Friends will be received from6-8 p.m. Sunday in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky,where American Legion Post 83 memorial services will be 7 p.m. followed by the Progress Lodge 83 Masonic services. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Faith Memorial Church, 1320 E. Strub Road, Sandusky. Pastor Kenneth Hiser and Pastor Curtis A. Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 83 honor guard.
