David A. VanFleet, 70, started his new life in heaven Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 2, 1937, in Bellevue to Leonard B. and Violet Mae (Worthen) VanFlee, now deceased. Mr. VanFleet was a member of New Hope Church in Naples, Fla., and Bellevue Alliance Church, Bellevue. He was a Sunday school teacher involved with the Fish and Loaves and conducted numerous Bible studies with children since 1974. He spent two years in the mission field in Haiti. He volunteered at the soup kitchen in Sandusky and as a Bellevue track timer. He was very involved in Redmen sports. He was an avid fisherman and a licensed guide on Lake Erie. He loved gardening, reading and was dedicated to people and their needs. He loved his children and grandchildren.
Mr. VanFleet worked for the Nickel Plate/Norfolk & Southern Railroad for more than 42 years, retiring in 1998. He also was a charter boat captain on his boat, Amazing Grace, on Lake Erie.
He married Barbara (Velliquette) VanFleet June 21, 1958, and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Kim (Darryl) More of Norwalk and Kip (Jill) VanFleet of Bellevue; grandchildren, Jonathan More, Jordan More, Troy VanFleet, Shauna VanFleet, Tyler VanFleet, Jessica Cook, Ryan Cook; and brother, Lynn (Marlene) VanFleet of Clyde.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Doris Tea, Winifred Boyer, Mary Ida VanFleet, Edwin VanFleet, Louis VanFleet, John VanFleet, Vernon VanFleet, Robert VanFleet.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Auxter Funeral Home, Bellevue, where funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Dwight Powell and Pastor Mike Boyes will officiate. Burial will follow at Bellevue City Cemetery.
