Donald Francis Stoll - November 25, 1919-September 15, 2007

Aug 31, 2015

Born November 25, 1919, in Sandusky to Herman and Robertina Stoll, Don and his siblings, Mary Alice, Robert and Betty Clare were raised in an environment combining German work ethic with continuous education and a belief in endless possibility.

Don passed away at home Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, with his loving wife of 54 years, Marian Lois Stoll, at his side.

He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1937 and went on to earn his college degree from The Ohio State University in 1941. There, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, a Buckeye cheerleader and named "Best-Dressed-Beau Brummel" two years in a row.

He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army, which included stints in the cavalry, the glider corps, and at the Pentagon. After the war, Don began working at Diamond Fertilizer Company, later to become part of Union Carbide. There he met the love of his life, Marian Stout, in 1951 and married her Sept. 12, 1953. They had five loving children who became the focal point of their lives.

In 1969, Don began a business partnership that became Kirsto Chemical Company, where he acted as vice president and CFO for 15 years. Kirsto's factories and regional centers were far-flung. Don often combined long-distance business trips with family driving vacations to teach his five children about the history and cultures across the U.S.

Don was a voracious reader who found joy in learning new things every day of his life. A great storyteller, humorist, gardener and gourmet chef, he was the center of social gatherings at home with family, neighbors and his many friends.

After retirement, Don volunteered at St. Lawrence Hospital and University Lutheran Church, was a proud member of "The Mushers" and Freewheelers and was an avid golfer (more for the walk than the score, he said).

Don was a devoted husband, father and a friend to all who came in contact with him. His love and memory live on with his wife, Marian; children, Martha (Todd) Albertson of Arden Hills, M.N., John (Patty) of Portage, Mich., Matthew (Kristy) of Pleasant Ridge, Mich., Sarah (Mark) Ortwine of Novi, Mich., and Mary (Greg) Gluck of Brockport, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren, Sarah and Amanda Albertson, Evan, Connor and Garrett Stoll, Nicholas and Logan Stoll, Elizabeth Ortwine, and Madison, Natalie and Paul Gluck.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at University Lutheran Church, 1020 Harrison Road, East Lansing. The family will receive friends and visitors in an informal gathering before the service, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions are preferred and can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Heart Association or University Lutheran Church. Flowers may be sent to University Lutheran Church.
