Claude "Pickle Slim, Boss Man, Pops, Smitty" Smith, 78, was born April 24, 1929, in Augusta, Ga., to Julian and Inez (Jones) Smith. He entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, under the extraordinary care of Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He attended school in Augusta and was employed by Ford Motor Company, Lorain, for more than 30 years before retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Stephens A.M.E. Church where he served faithfully on the usher board and male chorus. He also served as an assistant to the superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a multi-faceted "jack-of-all-trades" who was notorious throughout the community for his numerous good deeds and works. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed visiting the local hospitals and nursing homes on a weekly basis to pray and fellowship with the sick and shut-in. Claude was indeed a faithful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend. He always had an encouraging word and endearing smile for everyone whom he encountered.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving, devoted and faithful wife, Virginia (Webb) Smith; one son, Ralph (Jill) Shumate of Green Springs; three daughters, Linda Smith, Kim Smith and Hope (Anthony) Watson, all of Sandusky; nieces, Dorothea (Terrence Sr.) Shorts of Lorain, Ruby Wigfall of Savannah, Ga., Gloria Jean Dunbar of Denmark, S.C., and Deloise (Alfonzo) Jenkins of Augusta; nephews, Ernest (Essie) Smith of Hephzibah, Ga., and Leroy (Jacqlyn) Smith of Augusta; cousins, Elizabeth Walker, Annette Thomas and Annie Pearl Jones, all of Augusta and Annie Flourney and Mamie Butlerd, both of Sandusky; sisters-in-law, Aline Brown, Emma Smoot, Judy (L.Z.) Pearson and Martha Webb, all of Sandusky; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Inez Smith; three brothers, Ernest (Ruth), Samuel (Nellie) and James; and two sisters, Bernice Smith and Earlene (Harry) Edwards.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Sunday in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Homegoing services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Porter's Memorial C.M.E. Church, 1722 Third St., Sandusky. The Rev. Thomas Darden will officiate.
