Ernest Alan "Ernie" Windnagle, 71, of Sandusky, fought a good battle against cancer and has gone home to be with his Lord late Sunday night, Aug. 19, 2007, in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 26, 1935, in Sandusky, and was a 1953 graduate of Sandusky High School and a 1975 graduate of Bowling Green State University. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed woodworking and caring for his yard and garden. Ernie was a true sports and outdoor enthusiast. Throughout the years, he had worked for Lyman Boats, Erie County, Scott Paper of Sandusky, Graphic Controls of Alpena, Mich., and of Wilmerding, Pa., and later retired in 1998 from Stein Inc. in Sandusky. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Ernie was a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion at Sorrowful Mother Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Shelby) Windnagle, whom he married Sept. 4, 1954; two daughters, Mrs. Renee (Mark) Michaels of Latrobe, Pa., and Mrs. Lisa (Steve) Alexander of Graceton, Pa.; two sons, Daniel (Dana) Windnagle of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Christopher (Deanna) Windnagle of Kodiak, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Christopher and Katherine Windnagle, Emily and Caitlin Michaels, Heather Berman, Matthew and Megan Windnagle, Allie, and Matthew and Julieann Alexander; two sisters, Mrs. Marilyn Kaczorowski of Norwalk and Mrs. Martha (Frank) Vaccaro of Sandusky; three brothers, John (Joyce) Windnagle of Clyde, Robert Windnagle of Norwalk and Walter (Ruth Ann) Windnagle of Sandusky; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Julie Ann Windnagle on July 4, 1959; his mother, Mrs. Helen (Lamb) Windnagle on Nov. 30, 1990; and his father, Ernest P. Windnagle on Oct. 11, 1966.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where Rosary services will be 8:30 p.m. and where prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Marty Nassr will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
