The Rev. Mike Madden, 70, a Toledo Diocesan priest since 1962, passed away early Monday morning, Aug. 13, 2007, in Hospice Center, Toledo.
Born Feb. 1, 1937, in Sandusky, to George "Mic" Madden and Gertrude (Dempsey) Madden, Fr. Mike grew up in St. James Parish and graduated in 1955 from Central Catholic High School. He entered St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and continued his studies at Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Cincinnati, where he finished his four years of theology in 1962. He was ordained Dec. 22, 1962. His further studies earned him a master's of education degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, in August 1963.
In his early ministry he was an assistant pastor at Lima St. Rose; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Toledo; Sandusky Sts. Peter & Paul; Fostoria St. Wendelin; Toledo St. Catherine and at St. Thomas Church in Toledo.
In 1964 he was appointed pastor of St. Michael's, Kelleys Island, and Our Mother of Sorrows at Put-in-Bay. His later pastoral assignments were at Sandusky Holy Angels and the Community of the Risen Christ, Toledo.
For several years he was the chaplain at Siena Heights College in Adrian and also was a chaplain at the Medical College of Ohio and at the St. Bernadine Home, Fremont.
Fr. Mike retired in 1997 and lived at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish.
Some of Fr. Mike's other experiences and areas of expertise were in clinical pastoral education and specialty counseling in areas including psychiatric, crisis/suicide and marriage and family counseling. He directed and preached retreats for priest, sisters, deacons, high school seniors and college students. Fr. Mike was involved with the Cenacle (Charismatic) Movement for a Better World, Food for the Poor and Cursillo. He was a former board chaplain of Retrouvaille of Northwest Ohio.
He still had time for hobbies of travel, racquetball, golf, sailing, fishing reading, photography and architecture.
He is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Don) Hedrick; nephew, David (Shelly) Collins; niece, Melissa LaForge; and two grand-nieces, Mehgan Younker and Hannah Collins.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Coyle Funeral Home 1770 S. Reynolds Road, Toledo. The body will be received at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns church and can be viewed until 7 p.m. Vespers service. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, celebrated by Bishop Leonard Blair. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may take the form of a contribution to the Priest's Retirement Fund of the Toledo Diocese or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
