Elwood A. "Duke" Meyers, 88, of Sandusky, died early Saturday morning, July 21, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Berea, Ohio. He was a graduate of Sandusky High School, and Case Institute of Applied Science, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1941. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II after attending Dartmouth College and M.I.T. for the military. Duke was president of Russell Trucking Line Inc., served on the board of Providence Hospital and was a member of Plum Brook Country Club. He was an avid sportsman, loved hunting and fishing and also enjoyed painting, traveling and golf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia (Elsperman), whom he married Aug. 30, 1941; three daughters, Barbara M. (Dr. Robert) Vogel of Little Rock, Ariz., Carol M. (William) Niggemyer of Fremont and Joanne M. (Neil) Hoak of Berlin Heights; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Clifford (Jean) Meyers of Bay View; a niece, Helen Kaye Goncz, who lives with Elwood and Virginia; and several other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ella A. (Hartleib) Meyers Fred; his father, Albert Meyers; a sister, Eleanor Meyers; and two brothers, William and Russell Meyers.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev J. Roger Skelley-Watts of the United Methodist Church, Huron, will officiate.
