Dennis P. "Otis" Ward, 59, of Amherst, Ohio, died Saturday, June 23, 2007, at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 7, 1947, in Lorain, and lived in Amherst since 1976. He graduated from St. Mary High School, Lorain, in 1965 and received an associate degree from Lorain County Community College. He served in the U.S. Army for several years during the 1960s. Dennis worked as a millwright at General Motors in Sandusky, retiring in January of this year. Prior to that, he worked as a millwright at Lorain Works U.S. Steel for 10 years.
He had also owned and operated B&M Grill on 14th Street in Lorain from 1972-75. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst, the UAW Local 913, United Steel Workers Local 1104, American Legion Post 83 of Sandusky, was a life- member of AMVETS Post 47 of Lorain, Fraternal Order of Eagle's 444 in Sandusky, and Lake Erie Moose Lodge 552 of Lorain. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling and was an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed entertaining his friends at his home.
Surviving is his wife of 35 years, Monica (Scherrer); his son, Scott of Amherst; daughters, Cindy Ward and Jaime Ward, both of Amherst; a brother, Michael Paul "Mickey" (Sherry) Ward of Lorain; and two nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Ward in 1992, and Kathleen (MacKenzie) Ward, in 2000.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. A mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Larry Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
