Russel W. Patrick, 94, of Sandusky, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 20, 2007, in his home after a brief illness.
He was born May 28, 1913 in his home in Bellevue. He was a 1931 graduate of Bellevue High School and studied electrical engineering at a college in Fort Wayne, Ind. His first job was at Ohio Public Service in Sandusky, where he met Mary Virginia Gosser. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Russel and Virginia were married on New Year's Eve in 1941, just a few weeks before Russ enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Wright-Patterson Field. He served first in the 21st Air Depot Group, refurbishing Liberator Bombers at Burtonwood Air Base near Warrington, England. He returned to attend Officer's Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, N.J., and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps in 1943. Lt. Patrick was stationed as a radio carrier officer at Finschhafen, New Guinea and later in Northern Luzon, Philippines, in 1945. After the war, Russ owned and operated Sandusky Diaper Service and the Sof-Spra Car Wash on Milan Road. He was a member of Ohio Chapter of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, serving for many years as its Compact Chairman. He was also a member of Delano Kindred and a lifetime member of the VFW, Sandusky. Russ and Virginia spent summers at the family cottage on LaSalle Island near Cedarville, Mich., and touring the country to visit their grandchildren. Russ enjoyed puttering around the house and tinkering at the cottage.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Virginia (Gosser) Patrick; children, Kathleen (David) Moore of Marietta, Ga., Thomas (Wendy) Patrick of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., Nancy (Frank) Carney of Minneapolis, Minn., and John (Sue Joy) Patrick of Sandusky; eight grandchildren, Monique, Steven, Michael, Thomas, Jeffrey, Zachary, Kaitlyn and Shandor; two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Elanor; brother, George Patrick of Victorville, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
His was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Leroy and Edna Viola (Humphrey) Patrick; and brother, Thomas Patrick.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where a family service will be 6 p.m. Sunday. A graveside service will 1 p.m. Monday in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
