Caroline H. Acree, 91, of Norwalk, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, in the home of Shane and Jennifer Maynard and Barb Lanius of Grove City, Ohio, after a short illness.
She was born Aug. 30, 1915, in Lorain, to George and Joanna (Laning) Hutcheson, now deceased. She received her master's degree in education from the University of Chicago. She married the late Lester Acree on July 19, 1939, and they taught school for 50 years in Greenville, Miss., during the integration of the public schools. She taught Latin, Greek and English. She was a member of Norwalk First United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women, and the Wesleyan Circle. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, and was a 50-year member of the Queen Esther Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Stars where she was a five-time Worthy Matron. She retired from teaching in October 1990 and moved to Norwalk where she resided with William and Barbara Lanius. She was an avid genealogist, and was descended from the pioneer families of Griffin, Laning, Sheldon and Wood. She enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and Hawaii. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading.
She is survived by a niece, Patricia Acree; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; and by several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Acree; stepbrother, Wade Zimmerly; and stepsister, Mary Emma Zimmerly.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today in Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Norwalk First United Methodist Church, 60 W. Main St., Norwalk, where the Rev. Edna Stahl will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Dover, Tenn.
