Leland J. Welty, 92, of Sandusky, died Monday evening, June 4, 2007, at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1914, in Pandora, Ohio. He graduated from Lima Central High School in 1932 and attended Lima Business College from 1932 -33. He was employed by Swift & Co. and Bowsher & Kingman, CPAs in Lima while completing audited accounting courses at The Ohio State University in preparation for the CPA exam, obtaining his certification in 1937. He served during WWII with the U.S. Navy, Naval Cost Inspection, Joshua Hendy Iron Works, in Sunnyvale, Ca., from March 1944 until April 1946.
He was employed within various departments of the Internal Revenue Service as a special agent prior to founding Welty, Wiechel & Co., public accounting practice, retiring as a partner in 1978. Following retirement, he continued on part-time as an advisor to several local corporations.
Mr. Welty was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, and a lifetime member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and American Institute of CPAs. He was a member of the Sandusky Yacht Club, Catawba Island Club, Elks Club, Sandusky American Legion Commodore Denig Post, and Exchange Club of Sandusky. He served as director and director emeritus of Citizens Banking Co. and Firelands Community Hospital, and past director of the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Welty is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Chic) Knight of Sandusky and formerly of Ashland, Ohio; and two grandsons, Kevin (Jo) of Carpentersville, Ill., and Kyle (Kristi) of Sandusky. Also surviving are two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine M. (Miller) Welty, on May 12, 2005, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1938; his parents, Aldine J. and Mary E. (Amstutz) Welty; and two brothers, Clyde and Arthur.
The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. Saturday until memorial services at noon, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Lenore Kure will officiate. A lunch will be served at the church following the service.
Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
