Joseph E. "Joe" Gray, 85, of Sandusky, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 5, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Zela, W.Va., and was a graduate of Summersville High School in Summersville, W.Va. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gray retired in 2002 from Dixon-Ticonderoga (American Crayon) where he had worked for more than 50 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was involved in the Couples Club and was for many years, the superintendent of the Sunday School. He was also a former member of the American Legion. He enjoyed taking scenic bus tours with his wife, Alice, and was an avid mall walker. He was also a fan of the Cleveland Indians.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Jo (Roy) Johnson of Hartford City, Ind.; stepdaughter, Lois A. (David) Wolshuck of Sandusky; step-son, Jack G. (June A.) Burton, Sr. of Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren, John Wolshuck, Jackie O'Loughlin, Jack Burton Jr., Jodi B. Trovillo, Jeremy, Adam and Sara Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; other relatives; three sisters, Virginia Cavendish and Mary Gross of West Virginia and Hester Drennen of Sandusky; brother, Egbert (Florence Byers) Gray of Sandusky; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Pina (McClung) Gray; wife, Alice M. (McGeachie) Gray on Jan. 22, 2003; two brothers, John Gray and one in infancy; three sisters, Imogene Donaldson, Garnet Cook and Hazel McVicker; two step-brothers, Ollie and Ottie Gray; and step-sister, Olcie Clay.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. Friday until services at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2211 Mills St., Sandusky. The Rev. Gary R. Ulrich will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
