Esther A. Behnke, 95, formerly of Castalia, died peacefully Saturday evening, June 2, 2007, in Lutheran Memorial Home, Sandusky.
She was born July 15, 1911, in Castalia, and was a graduate of Margaretta High School where she was a star athlete. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Castalia, the Women of the Church, taught Sunday school for many years, was a member of the sewing circle, the Bible Study Circle, Women's Lunch Bunch, Resthaven Senior Group, and loved to travel and play cards. She was always there to help her family members and was a mother to many.
Esther is survived by four daughters, Lois Stang of Monroeville, Carol (Donald) Ebert of Sandusky, Janet (Michael) Maistros of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Diane (William) Jacoby of Castalia; 12 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dora Meyers of Castalia and Joan Deering of Greenwich; two brothers, August Miller and John (Shirley) Miller, both of Castalia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Behnke, in 1984, to whom she was married 54 years; her parents, Carl F. and Amelia (Schoewe) Behnke; six brothers, Elmer, Lee, Carl, Quentin, Paul and Calvin Miller; and Alan Stang and Wiley Miller.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Lutheran Church, 203 S. Washington St., Castalia, with the Rev. Kathleen Suggitt officiating. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
