Gerald E. Weir, 82, of Roaming Shores, Ohio, died early Sunday morning, May 27, 2007, at his residence after a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born June 18, 1924, in Struthers, Ohio, the son of Roy H. and Avis M. (Bebout) Weir and was a resident of the area most of his life, wintering in Florida for 11 years. Mr. Weir was a graduate of Jefferson High School and Kent State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.

He was married to Marilyn R. Johnson Feb. 2, 1950, at Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. Mr. Weir was an engineer and plant manager for Sanborn Wire Products for almost 40 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church since 1939 and a member of the Jefferson Exchange Club.

He was also a member of Toastmasters and was on the committee to bring the Kent State University branch to Ashtabula. He was a coach and manager for 14 years for Jefferson Little League and enjoyed golf, fishing, traveling, gardening and bird watching. Mr. Weir was part of the grounds crew at Hickory Grove Golf Course as his retirement job.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; four children, Dalene R. (James) Becka of Chardon, Ohio, David J. (Donna) Weir of Chardon, Daniel E. (Karen) Weir of Brunswick, Ohio, and Dale A. (Dori) Weir of Huron; 11 grandchildren, Lisa, Jessica, Brian (Amy), Nicole, Brittany, Steven, Kevin, Erin, Jacque, Eric and Paige; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Jacob; a sister, Doris M. Campbell of Pierpont, Ohio; and two brothers, Russell E. Weir of Bushnell, Fla., and Robert F. Weir of Titusville, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Avis in 1980 and Roy in 1994; a step-mother, Belle Cochran Weir in 1993; and two brothers, Wilbur R. and Richard L. Weir.

Calling hours will be 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
