Bernard W. Schaffer, 75, of Norwalk, died Sunday evening, May 20, 2007, in Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk.
He was born May 12, 1932, in Peru Township and was a 1950 graduate of Monroeville High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War serving on the USCG Balsam from 1951 until 1954. He was a carpenter and worked for various contractors building more than 32 homes in the Norwalk area. He was a life-member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Norwalk VFW Post 2743 and American Legion Post 41.
He is survived by his sons, Christopher (Jean) Schaffer of Claremore, Okla., and Robin (Alisa) Schaffer and Jeffrey (Elaine) Schaffer, both of Norwalk; daughters, Cynthia (Mark) Lee of Monroeville and Maria (Paul) Temple II and Bernadette Seitz, both of Norwalk; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Sister Lenarda of Toledo and Sister Frances Marie of Kankakee, Ill.; brothers, Leonard Schaffer, Alex (Betty) Schaffer and John (Doris) Schaffer, all of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Schaffer in 2004; parents, Leonard and France (Hohler) Schaffer; brothers, the Rev. Aronald Schaffer, Peter Schaffer, Frederick Schaffer and Joseph Schaffer; and sisters, Ophelia Storme and Margaret Wasiniak.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 1360 Settlement Road, Norwalk. The Rev. Kenneth Lill will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
