Richard "Mack" McElroy, 90, of Vickery, died Monday morning, May 21, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Sandusky, and was a 1935 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was employed for more than 50 years by Martin Cafeteria Services at New Departure, retiring in 1985. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Vickery.

Mack was in Boy Scouts of America for 78 years, joining on his 12th birthday. He was scoutmaster for Troop 8 in the 1940s and Troop 23 in the 50s and 60s. He received the Silver Beaver Award, Leadership Development Plan Award, Commissioner's Arrowhead Honor, Wood Badge Award, Tin Squirrel Award, District Award of Merit, Training Recognition Plan Award, 50-year Award in 1978, Community Service Award for Scouting, Lamb Award, and in 2003 his 75-year Membership Award.

In scouting, he served as district commissioner, unit commissioner for Pack and Troop 23, unit commissioner for Pack 20 and Troop 25, religious retreat committee, was an Over-the-Hill Gang member, Can-Am Committee, Merit Badge councelor, and Eagle Badge counselor. He enjoyed cooking at camporees.

He is survived by his wife, the former Charity Kirkland, to whom he was married 42 years; three daughters, Martha Cooner of Huron, Patricia (Harry) Hartman of Wakeman and Deborah (Michael) Young of Ravenswood, W.Va.; two sons, Bruce (Annette) Bell of Vickery and David (Linda) Bell of Fremont; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Gloria Brackney; a brother, Forrest (Arlene) McElroy both of Sandusky; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Martha (Erdmann) McElroy; a son, Robert Bell; a brother, Andrew; and two sisters, Mary and Marjorie.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, where services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. David E. Klappenbach will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
