Eugene Haas, 84, of Huron, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, in Cleveland Clinic.
He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Norwalk. He was a 1940 graduate of New London High School and a graduate of Dale Carnegie Training. He lived in many areas of the east and Midwest during his trucking career, moving to Lakewood, Ohio, in 1965. He lived in Huron, for the last three years.
Gene's lifetime career was in the trucking industry, serving a variety of positions with US Truckline. This included being president of KenDale Express and U.S. Truck Brokerage, both U.S. Truckline subsidiaries. He enjoyed public speaking throughout his career. In May 1988 Gene and his wife opened Metro USA, Inc. in Rocky River, Ohio, where he remained as president until 1994 when he sold the company to his employees.
Gene enjoyed connecting with his friends and family on the computer, following local and national sports and completing crossword puzzles. He loved fishing in Lake Erie on his boat. He was a sportsman, avid golfer and a long-time member of Avon Oaks Country Club.
Survivors include his brother, Don of Boston, Va.; grandson, Alex (Jean) Haas of Wheaton, Md.; great-grandsons, Sam, Jack and Quinn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty, in 1994; son, Kenneth E. in 1983; parents, Weigand and Mildred (Thornton) Haas; and brothers, Frank and Howard.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. Thursday until services at 3 p.m. at Dicicco-Berry Funeral Home, 23040 Center Ridge Road, Westlake, OH 44145
