Leslie L. "Duke" Harper, 75, of 8 State St., Norwalk, died Sunday afternoon, May 20, 2007, in Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk after a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Garrett, Ind., and graduated from Garrett High School. He was a member of the Special Forces in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Iron Dukes basketball team that played throughout Europe. Duke was an avid fan of all sports, favoring the Yankees. He was a lieutenant for the Huron County Sheriff's Department and was an investigator for the Huron County Prosecutor. He retired from Tenneco Automotive of Milan. He was a member of Norwalk American Legion 547, life-member of Norwalk VFW Post 2743 and a member of Norwalk First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie; daughters, Leslie (Clinton) Campbell of Norwalk, Sherrie Harper of Wilmington, N.C., Monica (Steven) Wooten of Orlando, Fla., Melanie Harper of Carlsbad, Calif., Melissa (James) Spettle of Norwalk and Melinda Harper of Norwalk; brother, Lavon Harper of Lima, Ohio; sisters, Charolette (Charles) Myles of Columbus and Pam Hunter of Delaware, Ohio; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; uncle and aunt Royal and Martha Doster of Willard; aunts, Mabel Andrews of Garrett, Ind., and Shirley Miller of Columbus; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charity Ann Harris; father, Foster Harper; sister Wilma Harris; and an uncle, Alfonzo Doster.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 60 W. Main St., Norwalk. The Rev. Edna Stahl will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
