George O. Fish, 83, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007, in Erie County Care Facility, Huron. George previously lived with his daughter and son-in-law in Norwalk, for four years.
George was born April 16, 1924, in Flint, Mich., the son of Nina Vay and George R. Fish, now deceased. After graduation from Bendle High School in 1924, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country honorably during World War II, from 1941-44. He was a sergeant with the 257th Field Artillery Battalion in Northern France and Central Europe earning numerous metals of distinction. After the war, George returned to Michigan and began working for the U.S. Postal System in Davison. In 1947, he married Maxine E. Alexander, of Davison, Mich., and raised two children, Janell and Kevin. While working for the U.S. Postal System, George and his late wife, Maxine, also owned and operated Northern Advertising and Mailing Company, located in Davison. George retired from the U.S. Post Office in April of 1979, after 35 years of dedicated service.
Prior to moving to Bonita Springs to enjoy retirement, George married Shirley Simmington in 1986. While living in Bonita Springs, George enjoyed for many years the position of president of the Leisure Time Association and as a couple, enjoyed the position of activities directors.
George, nicknamed by his children "Grouper," loved painting with oils, especially landscapes with barns and portraits of flowers. He also enjoyed bird watching, loved the game of golf, casinos and chocolate treats. Dad's standing birthday dinner always consisted of coney dogs, fries, root beer and of course, apple pie for dessert. Dad had a fabulously quick wit, a big smile for everyone he came in contact with and an infectious sense of humor which touched everyone with laughter, whether a friend or stranger.
Mr. Fish was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 267 in Davison, Davison Country Club, The Masonic Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles of Durand, Mich.; and the Elks Club and Moose Lodge of Bonita Springs, Fla.
