Russell A. Holmes Sr., 96, of Norwalk, died early Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, in Fisher-Titus Medical Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Norwalk to Edward C. and Bertha W. (Zeck) Holmes, now deceased, and was a lifelong area resident. He retired from the City of Norwalk Waste Water Treatment Plant where he worked for 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 91st Chemical Mortar Battalion during W.W.II at the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed the reunions of his Army unit, golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 711; Ken Bur Bell Post 41 American Legion; and was a life-member of Firelands Post 2743 VFW.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Russell A. and Vicki Holmes Jr. of Huron; his daughters and son-in-law, Patricia A. Alt and Kail Ann and Darryl Young of Norwalk; grandchildren, Charles and Cindy Alt, Robert and Melissa Alt Jr., Tim Alt, Rick and Connie Alt, Steven and Lori Alt, A.J. Fischer, Cindy and Michael Conney, Jeff and Tracy Young, Stacy and John Celeta, Brian and Elizabeth Young, Hallie and Victor Catri and Brittney and Kris Majoy; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy V. Holmes in 2002, and by his sister, Rosella K. Bishman.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Mark Bogen, associate pastor of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Norwalk Public Library, 46 W.
